MDCs of the United Democratic Party (UDP) on Wednesday demanded disciplinary action against Nongkrem MDC Lambor Malngiang for his alleged anti-party activity by extending support to the National People’s Party (NPP)-led executive committee in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC).
This came a day after Malngiang had openly announced his decision to support the EC led by Pyniaid Sing Syiem.
Addressing the media, UDP parliamentary party leader Titosstarwell Chyne said the emergent meeting of the parliamentary party has unanimously decided to write to the UDP chief Metbah Lyngdoh to immediately take disciplinary action against Malngiang.
He said Malngiang is an MDC of the party, who had joined recently and who had even contested the 2023 Assembly polls on an UDP ticket.
“We demand the party to take disciplinary action against him for his act of betrayal against the party and all the MDCs. Though, he had stated it is just a support but it clearly shows that he wanted to come out of the party,” Chyne, who is also leader of opposition, said while adding it is upto the party to either suspend or expel the MDC.
To a question, the PP leader said, “That will depend on the party (what kind of disciplinary action it will take), we as MDCs have expressed our strong disappointment against the anti-party activity of Malngiang.”
Chyne said that Malngiang’s support to the NPP-led EC has not come as a surprise. “This is because within 24 hours after the collapse of the EC led by UDP, we got information that Malngiang had secretly gone to extend support to the NPP but that time he did not openly announce it,” it added.
On Monday, UDP senior leader and nominated MDC Bindo M Lanong had also extended full support to the NPP-led EC. This has reduced the strength of the opposition from 12 to 10 members including one HSPDP and an Independent.
When asked, Chyne, who is also UDP East Khasi Hills president said that Bindo’s case is different altogether and that the party is likely to take a decision in regards to the veteran leader.
“Bindo has fought the MLA election as an Independent candidate which is against the party. But in regards to Bindo, discussions are on (yesterday also the matter was discussed) that the party will discuss and maybe there will be some decision taken in regards to Bindo,” he said.
Bindo had contested against Malngiang in the 2023 Assembly polls from Nongkrem constituency.
“Metbah had maintained that the party respects Bindo as he is one of the senior party leaders and is also an adviser of the party. We understand that he had taken that action based on emotions. Therefore, talks are on,” he said.
