Govt asks district admin to stop illegal coal mining: Tynsong

Deputy Chief Minister in-charge Home Prestone Tynsong on Friday said the government has ordered the district administration and police to stop illegal coal mining and other illegalities in the state.

Speaking to reporters, Tynsong said governments come and go but illegal coal mining is not a new thing and in fact it has started right from 2014 onwards, the moment the National Green Tribunal (NGT) banned the mining of coal in Meghalaya.

“By alleging that the present government just neglected the issue I think that is not fair and it is not true at all,” he said while reacting to a question related to the 18th interim report submitted by (Retd) Justice BP Katakey before the Meghalaya High Court recently.

He said that the law enforcement are there to check illegal mining of coal and other illegalities in the state.

“We have entrusted right from the district administration down to the police station or even to the block level where we have instructed the officials. Please be alert and please see that illegalities not only mining does not happen in the state of Meghalaya,” he said.
