Former Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) president Robertjune Kharjahin on Saturday joined the United Democratic Party (UDP), from where he is seeking party ticket to contest from Shillong constituency in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, slated to be held next year.

A lawyer by profession, Kharjahrin was welcomed by UDP MLA Renington Lyngdoh Tongkhar and members of the UDP Mawkyrwat Circle at Mawkyrwat in South West Khasi Hills.

Kharjahrin said he has decided to join the UDP because it has a capable and stable leadership.

“I am a regional minded person and my ideology – to promote, preserve and protect the unique identity of the indigenous people – is very close to the ideology of the regional party. And among the regional parties, UDP is the most acceptable party in Meghalaya. Therefore, I want to be part of such a team with stable and capable leadership,” he said while adding, “I respect all regional parties but since I have to choose only one, I choose the UDP.”

The former legal counsel of the KHADC said he has decided to contest the MP election because there are so many pending issues that are lying pending with the Government of India. He also slammed the sitting Congress MP Vincent Pala for failing to raise such pending issues relating to ILP, inclusion of Khasi language in the Eighth Schedule to the Constitution of India, international and inter-state boundary disputes, besides problems concerning the MMDR Act, amendment to the Sixth Schedule to the Constitution of India.

“I have not seen our MP raise that much of a voice (on such issues). That is why when he has not done justice to the duty he is supposed to do, criticizing him from outside only will serve no purpose at the end of the day. That is why I would like to continue my mission to protect, preserve and promote the Hynniewtrep people and I have decided if I have to give the best service to my people, politics is one of (the ways). That is why I would like to offer my candidacy,” he said.

Kharjahrin said that he would leave it to the wisdom of the UDP leadership to decide on the ticket.

“Party tickets will be decided by the UDP leadership and RDA. My only job is to offer my candidacy. So let the capable leaders decide on this,” he said.
