National People’s Party national vice president and deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong on Tuesday appointed as the new state president of the party in Meghalaya.
Tynsong is replacing lone Rajya Sabha MP Dr WR Kharlukhi, who was state president for 16 years, ahead of the Lok Sabha and Autonomous District Council (ADC) elections.
The new state president was felicitated by the NPP national president and chief minister Conrad K Sangma at a meeting held at the state party office in presence of party leaders and functionaries.
Congratulating Tynsong, Sangma said, “I would like to join the other leaders, who have expressed their joy and happiness on the appointment of Prestone Tynsong (as state president).”
“I have worked with him in many situations and from very difficult positions and large numbers of challenges we have faced together, we have grown together as friends, understanding each other;s concerns, problems and working as a team. I am very happy today that he has accepted this responsibility because I know his capacity and I know the kind of work he is capable of doing and I am sure that he will be taking from where Dr Kharlukhi have now left and he will take forward the mission of the party and I am sure that with the kind of grassroot work that he has done for the last many years, organizationally or from governance point of view – all of these will come into great work and help to be able to really organize the party. I have full faith that he will be able to do justice,” he said.
Seeking the support of all party leaders, Sangma said, “I only seek the support of all party leaders, you all know that the demand or request for Prestone Tynsong to take over has come from you so it is not that I have selected. It is a democratic process. It is just that election did not take place and all the votes came and everybody send the information and requests – it was literally a democratic process, all the way from Garo Hills to Jaintia Hills to West Khasi Hills to Ri Bhoi in all areas there was a consensus and that clearly reflects the kind of acceptance and the kind of faith that people have in the leadership of Prestone Tynsong.”
The NPP national chief also asked Tynsong to reconstitute the state level committee immediately.
In his maiden speech as new state president, Tynsong assured that reformation of the NPP will immediately take place.
“We need to really reform and I would also request that all senior members whenever assignment is made let us work hard,” he said while adding that his dream is also to complete the construction of the permanent building of the party office as soon as possible.
He also urged the party leaders and workers to work hard and ensure the party comes out successfully in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, slated to be held next year.
Tynsong further expressed confidence that under the leadership of Conrad K Sangma, NPP will control the entire North East region.
“(NPP will also be) the fact of the NE states as per constitution of the party and vision and mission of our late great leader PA Sangma, who wanted to create a party under the theme oneness of NE states,” he added.
