Assam and Meghalaya government on Saturday decided to hand over the investigation into the November 22, 2022 Mukroh firing incident to the central bureau of investigation (CBI).

Accordingly, the judicial commissions constituted by the two state governments to probe into the incident have been closed.

The decision was taken at the chief minister-level border talks held in Khanapara.

Addressing the media, Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “As a confidence building measure and not to put the respective officers of both the States in difficulties, we have decided to windup the judicial commissions ordered by Assam and Meghalaya to inquire the Mukroh firing incident.”

“Instead both the governments will request the CBI to investigate the matter. We will also request the CBI not to register the case either in Shillong or Guwahati but in a neutral venue so that the central government agency can inquire into the incident of violence,” he added.

Sarma said that the decision to wind up the judicial commission because none of them has been

able to make any progress adding that the Meghalaya witnesses are not willing to depose before the Assam judicial commission and Assam witnesses are coming to depose before the Meghalaya judicial commission.

“Therefore, in order to have a fair and impartial inquiry, we have decided that instead of pursuing the judicial inquiry… let us refer to the independent agency namely CBI and we will request the CBI not to register the case in Guwahati or Shillong but to register the case in an independent location either in Delhi or Kolkata wherever they like,” he added.

At least five Khasi villagers and one Assam forest official were killed in a firing by the Assam police and forest guards at Mukroh village in West Jaintia Hills District on November 22, 2022.
