Meghalaya chief minister Conrad K Sangma and Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will hold the next round of the second phase of border talks on Saturday for resolving the remaining six areas of difference shared by the two states.

The chief minister level border talks will be held at State Guest House (Koinadora), Khanapara, Guwahati.

Informing this on Friday, deputy chief minister Sniawbhalang Dhar said that the Lapangap issue will also be taken up during the border talks tomorrow.

“We will discuss the issue (relating to the tension at Lapangap village). We will finalise the decision on the action to be taken (by both states),” said Dhar, who is also chairman of the regional committee for West Jaintia Hills District.

Stating that the situation is under control, the deputy chief minister reiterated that Lapangap village does not fall under the area of difference.

“However when the people of Lapangap went to harvest their paddy fields, some conflicts had arisen. So let us see tomorrow (what decision will be taken on the matter),” he said.

Dhar informed that the deputy commissioners from both Assam and Meghalaya will also submit their respective reports on the incident during the meeting of the two chief ministers.

“We will try to resolve the issue and we want that peace be maintained by any means,” he said.

Fresh clashes between the Karbi and Khasi-Pnar communities have erupted at Lapangap village along the inter-state border with Assam over crop harvest in a piece of land since September 26.

Additional police forces have been deployed to ensure law and order is maintained.
