Meghalaya police seized drugs worth Rs 223 Cr during 2019-2023: Tynsong

SHILLONG, SEP 19: The State police has seized narcotics, drugs and psychotropic substances worth Rs 223 crore during 2019 till September 6, 2023, deputy chief minister in-charge home (police) Prestone Tynsong informed the Assembly on Tuesday.

“This is truly a remarkable achievement for Meghalaya police,” Tynsong said while replying to a zero hour notice brought by UDP MLA from Nongpoh Mayralborn Syiem.

“The menace of drug trafficking and consumption in the state is not being taken lightly and has been prioritized as one of the social evils which needs to be eradicated and dealt with stringently as per relevant provisions of law,” he said.

In order to be able to tackle the menace as per the existing provisions of law, Tynsong said the government of the day had notified the Advisory Board on June 30, 2023, to deal specifically with the issue of detention of habitual drug traffickers.

The Board has been constituted as per section 9 of the Prevention of Illicit Trafficking in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1988, and, henceforth, the detention of repeated offenders will be dealt with as per relevant provisions of the Act.

He informed that the police department has already submitted a proposal to initiate legal action against 9 repeated offenders as per the provisions of the PITNDPS Act, 1988.

In addition to invoking sections of the PITNDPS Act, 1988, the police department has also enhanced its mechanisms to curb the menace of drug trafficking and consumption in the State.

Further, the deputy CM said from the year 2019 till September 6, 2023, a total of 515 cases have been registered in the State wherein, 826 male and 109 female persons have been arrested.

In the same duration approximately 32,555 grams of heroin, 8479 kilograms of cannabis, 2796 grams of opium, 81 kilograms of crystal meth, 57,802 bottles of codeine cough syrup and 15,396 of other psychotropic substances have been seized by officials of the police department.

Apart from these notable seizures, police officials have also seized 287 vehicles, 881 mobile phones and 6 arms and weapons.
