SHILLONG, SEP 14: The Jaintia Students’ Movement (JSM) on Thursday sought the intervention of the deputy chief minister Sniawbhalang Dhar for addressing the various issues concerning the Jaintia Hills region.

In a memorandum submitted to Dhar, JSM president Leningstar Rymbai said the demand for setting up of a government college in East Jaintia Hills is yet to be fulfilled by the State government since 2015.

He said in absence of a government college in the district, students have no option but to attend classes at the Kiang Nangbah Govt College, Jowai in West Jaintia Hills.

Rymbai also expressed gratitude to the government for coming up with the people college scheme to four colleges in Jaintia Hills viz East Jaintia College, Nongtalang college, Shangpung college and Thomas Jones college, Jowai. He however said the government only announced that the salary of the lecturers in these colleges will be borne  by the government but it has failed to issue directions to the concerned colleges with regards to admission fees and monthly fees etc.

“We demand that the frees of the colleges covered under the people college scheme should be regulated by the government or the fee should be at par with Kiang Nangbah Government College so that terminology people’s college will be benefited else it will be more of political college,” he said while arguing that if the government has funds to pay the salary of lecturers in numerous colleges covered under the people college scheme then why the government cannot set up a government college instead.

The JSM has also demanded the government to speed up the completion of the three residential schools in Shangpung, Amlarem and Sabah Musniang in West Jaintia Hills District besides the setting up of the Pine Mount International School in Wahiajer village, engineering college in Thamuthlong village and science college in Mustem village.

It also asked the government to address the problems faced by the lone government college – Kiang Nangbah Government College, in terms of classrooms and shortage of lecturers for the morning section.

Further, the JSM has also demanded the government to upgrade the Laskein C&RD block into a  new civil sub-division.

Rymbai said there are around 100 villages and a population of nearly 1 lakh people in Laskein Block, which is also looking after villages like Khatkasla, Psiar, Moolber under Block I, which are under disputed areas.

“The area is lagging behind in all aspects and still reeling under the shadow of development thus in order to speed up the pace of progress and change in the areas, there is an urgent and immediate need of creating a civil sub division,” he added.

Meanwhile, the JSM also demanded the government to set up police outpost in Psiar village under Jowai police station, huroi village under Lumshnong police station, Lakadong village under Khliehriat police station and upgradation of Lad Rymbai outpost to a police station.
