Meghalaya Govt to pressurize Centre for addressing influx issue: CM

SHILLONG, AUG 16: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has said the State government will continue to pressurize the Centre for addressing the issue of illegal immigration into the state whether it is through the inner line permit (ILP) or the Meghalaya Residents, Safety and Security Act (MRSSA).

“We have continuously time and again put pressure on government to find a way so that we are able to address this issue whether it is the MRSSA or whether it is the ILP or whether it is any other mechanism that is there, we are concern about the overall issue of illegal immigration,” Sangma told reporters on Tuesday.

On the delay of the Centre to examine the ILP resolution passed by the State Assembly, the chief minister however said, “Concerning the issue of the government examining it, that is for the Government of India to reply to. It is not something that I can reply on behalf of the home minister or the GOI. So definitely I think the answer lies with them so you can ask them.”

Sangma also admitted that tourism has some effect from the ILP issue as there will be certain permission that will be required but it is not necessary that we need to connect these two stories.

“I would like to stress the fact that tourism is the main area for revenue generation as well as for employment generation in the state and hence we will ensure and continue to push tourism in the direction that it is moving and we will continue to work hard towards the overall tourism infrastructure,” he said.

Stating that ILP is an issue concerning illegal immigration into the state,  the chief minister said, “I have always maintained that there are multiple mechanisms to look into or find ways and means to find out ways to fight or have a kind of stop on the illegal immigration and hence ILP is one of those policies which has  been applicable in other parts of the country. Based on that, we had passed a resolution.”

“Apart from the ILP resolution, we had also passed the MRSSA (Amendment) Bill, which was then sent by Governor in that point in time to MHA and hence we have been pursuing multiple options and multiple policies through which we are able to achieve the ultimate goal which is to have some kind of a control over illegal immigration that is there and a mechanism in place,” he added further.
