SHILLONG, JAN 11: Granted bail in two of the three cases, the proscribed Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) chairman Champion R Sangma is all set to contest the upcoming Meghalaya assembly election slated for February 23.
The Shillong bench of the Gauhati High Court granted bail to the militant leader in two of the three cases that had been filed against him. Champion, of course, is still behind bar as the third case is still pending.
But his counsel Sujit Dey told reporters Friday after the hearing, “Whether he secures bail or not in the third case, he is determined to contest the upcoming assembly election.” He, however, informed that his client is yet to decide which constituency of the five he is toying will be contest from in Garo hills.
In December 17 Champion’s wife Enritha N Marak moved bail application following the failure of the first class Magistrate of Nongstoin to charge-sheet the militant leader in the cases that was filed in Nongstoin even after expiry of the mandatory 90 days for filing charges.
Champion has been charges in case no 9 (2) of 2012 under section 121 A, 353, 307 and 34 IPC/ section 10 and 13 of Unlawful Activities Prevention Act and 27 (2) of Arms Act.
Dey said because of the fault of prosecution to charge sheet his client, Champion was granted bail under Section 176 clause 2 IPC.”- By Our Reporter
