SHILLONG, JAN 12: NPP national president and chief minister Conrad K Sangma on Thursday said the Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma is taking “risk” by deciding to contest from two seats in the upcoming Assembly elections.
Mukul, who is currently the sitting legislator of Songsak constituency, has also decided to contest from Tikrikilla constituency citing that it was based on the peoples’ demand and is also part of his “political strategy”.
When asked if this is being looked at as an attempt to deny the NPP one seat, Conrad said, “You can assess it from your point of view but the way I see it is that he (Mukul) is risking himself by diverting his energy to two areas. So it is not going to be so simple. So depending on how you look at it, he is going to deny one seat to the NPP or I would look at it saying that he is now risking himself higher by contesting in two seats.”
Refusing to comment further, the NPP chief however said it is unfortunate that Mukul has left Ampati for Songsak and now he will leave Songsak for Tikrikilla.
“It is unfortunate that he has left Ampati, people had really made him what he was and then shifted to Songsok, people of Songsak put up their trust and faith in him and now he is leaving Songsak and he is going to Tikrikilla so I don’t what he has in mind it is his personal choice I have no comments about what he did or did not do or what decision he has made I think he is in a better position to say,” he said.
Asked why he is not contesting from two seats, Conrad said that he is committed to the people of South Tura.
“I have always maintained that I am not a person who jumps around, I want to show and set an example of stability, we should not be moving around, jumping around I think commitment to your constituency and people is very important that is number one for me so I am committed to the people of South Tura,” he said.
“I have worked very hard in the last five years to bring about change in Tura town and I think our efforts have shown some results. We are slowly seeing even development aspects coming to Tura also and because of the work that has happened I am pretty sure that people of Tura will once again repose their faith in my candidature in this election and I am confident that I will win,” the chief minister said.
