Pro ILP groups seek appointment with PM

SHILLONG, DEC 16: Eight pro-Inner Line Permit (ILP) groups have sought appointment with the Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit to the state capital on December 18.

They include Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP), Hynniewtrep National Youth Front (HNYF), Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU), Ri Bhoi Youth Federation (RBYF), Garo Students’ Union (GSU), Achik Youth Welfare Organization (AYWO) and Association for Democracy & Empowerment (ADE).

“We have urged the state government to facilitate the meeting with the Prime Minister. We want to take up the long pending demand for implementation of the ILP, inclusion of the Khasi and Garo languages in the Eighth Schedule to the Constitution of India and others,” KSU chief Lambokstarwell Marngar said on Friday.

He however said they are yet to get any confirmation on whether or not they will be allowed to meet the PM.

The Union Home Minister Amit Shah will also arrive in Shillong on Saturday evening.

When asked, Marngar said that the groups will not meet Shah. “We have met him at least three times in the past, we don’t want to waste our time,” he said while referring to Shah’s refusal to give any assurance on the matter.
