SHILLONG, AUG 27: The Meghalaya Gymnastics Association (MGA) on Saturday felicitated the young gymnasts who brought laurels to the state in the ” Invitational Gymnastics Championship ” which was held at Khuman Lampak Indoor stadium” on August 19 and 20, organised by Manipur Gymnastics Parents Association .
These include: Josephine Isabel Warjri (Under 17), who won the silver medal in vaulting horse, Bakmenhun Shangpliang (Under 12) – bronze medal in balancing beam and bronze medal in floor exercise and also the participants – Sa-I-bakor K. Tariang, Athilia Susngi, Wansaphi Bernadette Malngiang and Wansuk Mery Susngi.
This is the first time in the history of MGA from the inception in 1997, that the gymnasts won laurels outside the state, and also for the first time a former gymnasts from Meghalaya Lucy Mary Malngiang was selected to Judge in the Women’s Artistic Gymnastics and Aerobic gymnastics.
The Chief Guest on the occasion was Sebastian Swett, Vice President MSOA, who lauded and inspired the young gymnasts and encouraged them to bring more laurels to the state.
Other dignitaries present on the occasion were J.R Marak, Working President,MGA Mr.
Ezra Malngiang ,Vice President MGA ,members of MGA , parents , relatives and supporters of the gymnasts .
The programme was hosted by Rida Lyndem ,Joint Secretary M.G.A.
“All our gymnasts showed tremendous courage and performed very well despite the lack of a gymnastics dedicated hall , gymnastics apparatus, proper training and a SAI Coach. The Association needs support from the Government to set up a dedicated gymnastics hall and a Coach, so that we can prepare and produce world class gymnasts from the state who already have the body structure, flexibility and agility fit for gymnastics ,who can excel in the National and International competitions,” the association said.
