DGP visits Mawlai area

SHILLONG, JULY 20: The Director General of Police (DGP) Dr Lajja Ram Bishnoi on Wednesday interacted with the traditional heads and residents including youth of Mawlai in a bid to develop a friendly rapport with the citizens and take their help to improve policing in the city.

“Our aim is to help the people and not harass the people,” Bishnoi told reporters after visiting the localities in Mawlai area.

The DGP said that the aim is to develop a friendly rapport with the citizens and seek their cooperation for better policing in order to preempt the crimes.

“We want to involve the citizens in general and dorbar shnong in particular and be part of crime prevention strategy as many crimes can be prevented if people come forward with information as we will help them,” he added.

Stating that the people of Mawlai are humble and peace loving, Dr Bishnoi said that the area is more or less very peaceful except for a few localities where they are complaining about drug trafficking and drug peddlers.

“Therefore, with the help of people we want to go ahead and control this problem as police alone cannot find all the solutions. Therefore, we seek the cooperation of the people and particularly the dorbar shnongs and the headmen. I requested all the dorbar shnong members and headmen to please arrange the interaction with such youths who have fallen prey to drug abuse as we want to help them,” he said.

“If need arises we can increase the patrolling in these areas because of late complaints keep coming about the drug trafficking. Drug trafficking is the cause of concern in some but not all localities of Mawlai so we will take help from the dorbar shnong to deal with the situation,” he added.

Meanwhile, the DGP informed that he would conduct similar visits to other localities in Shillong to seek the cooperation of the traditional dorbar shnong and to interact with the youths, especially those who are interested in sports to facilitate them to join the force.
