SHILLONG, MAY 11: The Federation of All School Teachers of Meghalaya (FASTOM) on Wednesday threatened to stage a camp overnight in front of the secretariat as a mark of protest against the alleged failure of the chief minister Conrad K Sangma and his government to invite the adhoc teachers for talks on the demand to enhance their salary.
Addressing media persons, FASTOM spokesperson Mayborn Lyngdoh announced that the adhoc teachers have decided to organize a massive public rally from 12:30 noon on Thursday.
Lyngdoh said that for the last two months the Adhoc teachers had been protesting against the adamant attitude of the government and on 1 May the association had seek and audience with the chief minister to discuss on their demands but till date the chief minister office (CMO) had not even reply to their plea.
Lyngdoh said that last week the FASTOM had relaxed their agitation after the meeting with additional chief secretary D.P Wahlang who informed them that the file had been moved to the planning department for necessary action.
“Since the chief had not called us for talks, we will hold a massive public rally tomorrow in front of the main secretariat in Shillong and we will camp overnight in the street in front of the main secretariat if the chief minister fails to invite us for talks tomorrow” said Lyngdoh.
Lyngdoh said that the state government under the leadership of Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) had failed to allot funds for the teachers but it is only interested in allocating funds to various departments for organizing various festivals in the state.
He added that the chief minister is wrong that the state government had to spend hundreds of crores to enhance the salary of the teachers when the actual amount is only Rs. 152 crores per annum and Rs. 12.74 crores is needed to enhance the salary of Adhoc teachers.
“We fail to understand why the state government cannot call us for talks to discuss the funds required for the state government to shell in order to enhance our salary” he added.
