SHILLONG, JAN 4: Shillong Lajong FC ‘s season of woes continued as they were thrashed 0-6 by Goa’s Churchill Brothers in an I-League clash at the Duler Stadium at Mapusa in Goa on Friday.
A brace from substitute Akram Moghrabi and a goal each from Steven Dias, Henri Antchouet, Ajay Singh and Beto ensured a resounding victory for the Goa outfit, which perched them at the top of the table ahead of state rival Dempo SC by two points with a match in hand.
It, however, was not all easy going for Churchill Brothers as they struggled to come to terms with the artificial turf at the Duler Stadium. They had their first shot at the goal as late as in the 30th minute of the match when Gabonese striker Henri’s attempt was foiled by Lajong goalkeeper Basant Singh.
Five minutes later Steven Dias tapped in a long ball from Bilal Najjarine to put Churchill 1-0 up. It was 2-0 in not time as Raju Yumnan found Henri inside the heart of the Lajong danger zone and the Gabonese striker made light of a simple finish in the 42nd minute.
There was hardly anything to play for in the second session with Churchill already two goals ahead and Lajong lacking the stomach for a fight. Churchill, however, were not done yet. Ajay Singh put the match out of reach of the Shillong club when he headed in a brilliant cross from the right by Brazilian midfielder Beto in the 55th minute.
Substitute striker Akram Moghrabi also joined the party in the second session. He first headed home into an open goal after being fed by Raju, and followed that up with a 73rd minute goal.
Man of the Match Beto put the final nail in coffin of Lajong when his curling effort from outside the box found the top corner of the net. (By Our Reporter)
