SHILLONG, MAR 22: Teachers under the banner of the Federation of All School Teachers of Meghalaya (FASTOM) on Tuesday took to the streets to protest against the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government’s indifferent attitude towards their demands.
The Federation have also decided to intensify its agitation by holding an indefinite sit-in-protest in front of the Meghalaya Board of School Education (MBoSE)’s office from Wednesday, to pressurize the government to enhance the salary and upgrade services of ad hoc teachers to deficit system.
Speaking to reporters after the peaceful rally from Raj Bhavan to Malki playground, FASTOM EC member and the Khasi Jaintia Hills Adhoc School Teachers’ Association (KJHASTA) president Mayborn Lyngdoh said the objective of the rally was to send a clear message to the government that yesterday’s general meeting is not over yet.
“We have decided to intensify our agitation by holding sit-in-protest in front of the MBoSE office from 11 am to 3 pm every day. Five teachers will be sitting there rotationally. This is because we do not want to disturb the board exams,” he said.
Asking the government that it should not take the peaceful protest lightly, Lyngdoh said, “We are not thinking about the government but the students we are teaching and we have this responsibility on our shoulder that in this tussle or tug of war between the teachers and the government, the students should not get affected.”
Meanwhile, the FASTOM leader said that full swing agitation will be launched next month.
“We also send a clear message to the government that the moment April starts, if the government does not take action we are going to launch a full agitation and it will be in full strength. We will launch agitation in all districts of the state and in Shillong whether we get permission or not. We hope that the government will respond immediately as the teachers are tired and we cannot wait any longer,” he added.
