HANM dump border pillar erected by Assam infront of Secretariat, KHADC

SHILLONG, MAR 12: Activists of the Hynniewtrep Achik National Movement (HANM) on Saturday dumped a border pillar illegally erected by the Assam government at Umshru village in Ri Bhoi district – in front of the secretariat and the office of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC).

The HNAM had dismantled the illegal border pillar before bringing it to Shillong. The decision was taken as a mark of protest against the inaction of the state government and the KHADC against the illegal encroachment by the Assam government.

Speaking to media persons, HNAM President Lamphrang Kharbani said the people of Meghalaya particularly those residing along the interstate border can never accept this illegal act by the Assam government.

“We therefore demand the state government and the district council to swiftly intervene into the matter,” he said.

He said the state government should clarify on what grounds it has allowed the Assam government to erect a border pillar at Umshru village despite the ongoing border talks between the two states.

Meanwhile, Kharbani also demanded the KHADC to immediately summon the Syiem of Hima Jirang and seek explanation as to why he had allowed the Assam government to erect border stone in the village which falls very much under the jurisdiction of the Hima.
