M’laya, Assam CMs apprise Shah on border agreement, next meeting on Jan 26

This was after Meghalaya CM Conrad K Sangma and Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma apprised him on the reports of the Regional Committees during a meeting in New Delhi.

Sangma informed that the two chief ministers will again meet the Union Home Minister on January 26, after the reports are being examined by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

“Called on Hon’ble HM, @AmitShah ji with HCM of Assam,@himantabiswa ji and apprised him on the reports of the Regional Committees. He expressed happiness on the initiative taken by both the States in the matter. MHA will examine the reports & we will meet HM again post 26^th Jan,” Sangma tweeted.

Earlier, the chief minister had informed that two state governments would be submitting a common report for further action by the Centre.

There are 36 villages in the six areas of difference measuring about 36.79 sq. kms in the first phase.

When asked, Sangma had stated that the actual demarcation of the boundary will be done by the Parliament.

“…those aspects will be done at the powers of the parliament. The Survey of India will have to come in and joint inspections may have to be done and the bill has to be there,” he added.

The first meeting of the two chief ministers was held at Shillong on July 23, 2021 followed by the second meeting at Guwahati on August 6, 2021.

This was followed by the constitution of the six regional committees from Meghalaya and Assam which jointly conducted field visits and inspections to the border villages.

After a series of discussions, the regional committees submitted their reports to the respective chief ministers.

The six areas of difference include Tarabari (4.69 sq km), Gizang (13.53 sq km), Hahim (3.51 sq km), Boklapara (1.57 sq kms), Khanapara-Pilangkata (2.29 sq kms) and Ratacherra (11.20 sq kms).
