Exempt M’laya from CAA: Cong demanded

SHILLONG, DEC 21: The opposition Congress on Tuesday asked the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government to ensure that the whole state is exempted from the purview of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

Addressing media persons, MPCC working president PN Syiem informed that the issue related to the CAA which seeks to provide citizenship to illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Pakistan – and is applicability in the non schedule area of the state was discussed during the meeting of the District Congress Committee of East Khasi Hills.

“We have decided to urge the MDA government to ensure that the CAA will not be applicable in the municipal areas of the state,” he said.

He said that the party is also concerned about omicron, which is a variant of concern and which is spreading at a faster rate in the western countries.

“We feel that the state government should be fully prepared to tackle any eventuality due to the new variant of COVID-19 so that people will not be in a confused state like we have experienced in the past,” he said.

Syiem further said that the meeting also discussed how to strengthen the party in East Khasi Hills district.

He added that as per reports from all the BCCs, the party is gaining momentum from time to time and efforts are made to further strengthen the party at the grassroot level.

“We also decided to recommend the name of Banshan Lawai as the new working president for the EKH DCC,” Syiem informed.
