Knife surrender rally held in city

SHILLONG, SEPT 6: Residents of Mawlai under the banner of Sur Ki Nong Mawlai on Monday came out to participate in the ‘knife surrendering rally’ organized as a mark of protest against the state government’s adamant attitude to suspend the DGP and two SPs in connection with the alleged killing of former HNLC general secretary Cherishterfield Thangkhiew on August 13.

Shouting slogans “We want Justice,” the knife surrender rally which started from Mawlai petrol pump culminated at Mawlai stand bus.

The rally was symbolic of the knife the police had accused that Thangkhiew had attacked them.

Monday is also the last date notified by the district administration of East Khasi Hills to members of the conglomeration to reply to the show-cause notices served to them on August 31.

Speaking at the gathering, Donboklang Kharlyngdoh said that the rally is to openly reject the claim made by the state police that Thangkhiew, who was unwell, had tried to attack well trained police personnel during the raid conducted at his residence in Mawlai Kyntonmassar.

“The rally is not just to demand the immediate suspension of the three cops but also a response to the show-cause notice issued by the deputy commissioner (DC) East Khasi Hills against the leaders of the ‘Sur ki Nong Mawlai’ for organizing public meeting in Mawlai to condemned on the incident which took place on 13 August,” he said.

Kharlyngdoh said that the leaders of ‘Sur ki Nong Mawlai’ including the people are ready to go to prison but will never succumb to the show cause notice as they are firm with their demand. He added that the knives used were only to represent their protest and were never meant to confront the police or district administration.

The leaders of the Sur ki Nong Mawlai along with the residents also burnt copies of the notice served by the district administration.
