SHILLONG, JUL 26: The state police said that the situation at Iongkhuli village in Ri Bhoi district is under control following the clash that broke out between the local residents and the Assam police on Monday morning.
“At present the situation is under control and there have been no reports of any untoward incidents,” Assistant Inspector General of Police (A) Gabriel K Iangrai said in a statement here.
He informed that the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeCL) erected electric poles in Iongkhuli village on the same stretch where Assam Electricity Board had erected electric poles in the month of January 2021.
He said however, at around 11 am the Circle Magistrate Batistha Circle from Assam accompanied by senior police officials and a sizable police force came to the spot and dismantled the erected poles.
Iangrai further informed that the action of the Magistrate and the Assam police was met with stiff resistance from the people of the village, who protested against the unwarranted action of the Assam officials.
He said that the officials of Meghalaya comprising Addl District Magistrate, Superintendent of Police, Officer-in-Charge Khanapara Police Station, In-Charge Pilangkata Out-Post immediately proceeded to the spot to pacify the matter and to deliberate with the officials of Assam.
