SHILLONG, DEC 8: Employees of the Mawmluh Cherra Cement Limited (MCCL) on Tuesday staged an indefinite hunger strike in the state capital as a mark of protest against the delay of the state government to release their salaries.
The protest was called by the Mawmluh Cherra Cement Employees Union (MCCEU). The MCCL has over 300 employees.
Speaking to reporters, MCCEU president, S Diengdoh said the hunger strike will continue till the government is ready to comply with demands put forth by the employees.
He said the employees are at the receiving end since they are yet to get salaries for the past many months amounting to Rs 20 crore approximately.
“Therefore, we strongly demand the immediate release of our salaries,” he said. The pending salaries include five months from November 2015 to March 2016 and 10 months salaries from February this year till date.
The other demands also include 7 years overtime from 2013 till date, arrears of pay revision from April 2018 till date, medical reimbursement and other welfare facilities.
Asked, Diengdoh however said that the union will again sit to decide on its next course of action if the government fails to pay any heed to their demands.
On the other hand, the employees also urged the state government to take necessary measures to revamp the cement plant.
According to them, the cement plant has failed to improve its performance in terms of production and marketing despite the huge amount of money has been invested by the government.
They also said gone are those days when the MCCL used to be rice bowl of the people of Sohra. “Therefore, we want the government to find out ways and means to revive the cement plant,” the employees said.
