SHILLONG, DEC 13: The Medical Council of India (MCI) will soon conduct an inspection of the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS) before granting ‘recognition’ to the MBBS course in the institute.
“The NEIGHRIMS is yet to obtain recognition…The MCI would conduct the inspection by January next year,” deputy chief minister in-charge of health Rowel Lyngdoh told the Assembly on Thursday.
Raising the issue, Jaiaw legislator Paul Lyngdoh expressed concern over the lack of basic facilities available in NEIGRIHMS. The institute does not even have a separate building to conduct the MBBS course, and the matter needs to be addressed before the visit of the MCI team, he said, adding that the inspection should be done before the current batch of MBBS students complete their examinations.
Defense Land: The “retransfer’ of unused defense land in and around Shillong is being taken up with the Centre.
Informing this, Revenue and disaster management minister R. C. Laloo told the Assembly on Thursday that the state government has been taking up the issue with the defense ministry from “time to time’ and the state-level committee headed by the chief minister constituted for the purpose has also had two sittings so far. “As per the data available the defense establishments hold about 2096.12 acres in and around Shillong,” he said.
Raising the issue in the House, UDP legislator Paul Lyngdoh said there were vast stretches of land under various defense establishments which were lying unutilized.
Shillong Bypass: Replying to another query, Home minister H. D. R. Lyngdoh said the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) will not be in a position to complete the Shillong bypass project by the end of December this year as only 70 per cen of the work had been completed so far. The stipulated date for completion of the bypass is February, 2014.
He also said that the NHAI had adequately compensated all land owners, and it has also agreed to compensate farmers whose crops have been damaged due to the ongoing construction work. The deputy commissioner of East Khasi Hills, he said, has written to the NHAI asking them to pay the compensation to the farmers by this week.
