SHILLONG, JUNE 15: The state government has decided to allow conduct of marriages and weddings inside religious places in the state.
After a review meeting held on Monday, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong told reporters that the request was made by leaders of different religious organizations.
“On receiving the request from different religious leaders (including churches), the government has decided to allow performing of rituals as far as marriages and weddings are concerned inside the religious places,” Tynsong said.
He however maintained that re-opening of religious places or places of worship will further be kept in abeyance to prevent spread of COVID-19 in the state.
Asked, the deputy chief minister said concerned parties will have to obtain permission from the respective deputy commissioners for holding of marriage and wedding ceremonies inside the religious places.
“The order will be issued this evening to all the deputy commissioners for taking necessary action on today’s decision,” he said.
Tynsong further informed that the meeting also discussed on the re-opening of hotels, home stays, restuarants and others. He said the government has directed all the deputy commissioners and the concerned department to start having a close consultation up to the village level at the earliest.
“We are hopeful to soon get the feedback from all the DCs and thereafter, the government will take a final decision on this matter,” the deputy CM added.
