SHILLONG, JUNE 1: Ka Sur u Paidbah ka Bri u Hynniewtrep (SUPH) or the voice of the people has decided to pressurize the state government to ensure immediate implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in the state.
“We will mount pressure on the state government to ensure ILP demand is achieved,” SUPH chairman and former legislator HS Shylla told reporters on Monday.
According to him, implementation of the ILP will remove the fear of the indigenous people from being outnumbered by outsiders.
His statement has come as a strong protest against the government’s decision to grant special permission for migrant labourers who are highly skilled to work in the state despite the COVID-19 pandemic.
Shylla however said the COVID-19 crisis somehow has been a blessing in disguise as many of 50 percent of the outsiders including migrant labourers have left the state.
“However, we insist that the government should first implement ILP and then consider bringing labourers from outside the state failing which we will be made to understand that this government is for the migrant labourers,” he said.
Shylla also alleged that the government is giving more priority to prevent stigmatization due to COVID -19 instead of containment aspect.
He suggested that the government should strengthen the check points to ensure no inter-state movement of people is allowed into the state to prevent the spread of the disease. “As of now, the check gate at Byrnihat is over burdened and it cannot monitor the entry of people from outside,” he said.
The former legislator has also slammed the state government for succumbing to the tactics of the Centre government. “It was a big insult to the state government when the union home minister Amit Shah had told the delegation to celebrate Christmas and then come back again to discuss the issue (last year),” he said.
