Journalist passed away

SHILLONG, MAY 23: Veteran journalist and Editor of U Kynjatshai, Varioustar Nongsiej passed away on Friday after a brief illness.

In his condolence message, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said, “Nongsiej in his career spanning over two decades has worked in various capacities in the field of journalism including his service as  Editor of Kynjatshai and U Peitngor. His demise is a loss to the press fraternity of our state.”

Leader of Opposition Mukul Sangma said he has known Nongsiej for a very long time.

“With his passing away, I have lost a good friend. He has been a very resourceful member of the fourth estate in the state and have been instrumental in shaping and strengthening the vibrant press that we are proud of today, his contributions will be long cherished.”

A condolence meeting was held at the Shillong Press Club on Saturday.

Members paid rich tribute and recalled the contributions made by Nongsiej even as they observed two minute silence as a mark of respect to the departed soul.

“His passing away is a big loss not only to the press family but to the state as a whole,” SPC president David Laitphlang said.
