SHILLONG, MAY 15: Over 400 persons including those returned from outside the state have been flagged for alleged violation of COVID-19 quarantine protocol even as the state government has decided to issue strict warning against such violators.
“We were able to trace out around 400 persons who had ventured outside the confines of their homes in Shillong agglomeration,” Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong told reporters here on Friday.
Such home-quarantine people have violated the protocols despite repeated advice of the government to adhere to safety norms to prevent spread of coronavirus.
The deputy CM said following the incident, the health team had met the concerned dorbar shnongs and they have agreed to monitor people under home-quarantine round the clock.
“The health team had also met these home-quarantined people and they have assured not to violate the protocols anymore,” he said.
Issuing strict warning, Tynsong said, “Please don’t play around as people including your families and neighbours will not know whether you are a carrier of the virus or not.”
“That is why we are asking those returning from the various parts of the Northeast states to mandatorily go for 14 days quarantine while 28 days for those returning from states outside the region,” he added.
It may be mentioned here over 10,000 persons stranded across the country due to the national lockdown have registered with the government.
Tynsong said a total of 4681 stranded people have returned to Meghalaya from within and outside the Northeast region.
“All returnees have been asked to go for quarantine. Most of them are in community created quarantine centres,” he said while informing that the registration for those who desire to return to the state is still on.
Whether the government would extend financial support to stranded people who decided not to return to the state, the deputy CM said the government will take a call on the matter only after getting full details adding “But we salute such brave citizens who understand the situation and challenges faced by the government and local village authorities.”
