SHILLONG, SEPT 18: Two-time United Democratic Party legislator, H Brolding Nongsiej on Wednesday was sworn in as the 12th minister of the Conrad K Sangma-led Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government.
Nongsiej, who is representing the Mawthadraishan constituency in West Khasi Hills District, was administered oath of office by Governor, Tathagata Roy at Raj Bhavan.
The swearing in ceremony was attended by Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, Assembly Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh, cabinet ministers and other dignitaries.
The post of minister fell vacant following the resignation of UDP president Metbah Lyngdoh as tourism and water resources minister to get elected as the Speaker of the tenth Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.
Expressing his happiness on the occasion, Nongsiej said, “It is a matter of great pride for the people of Mawthadraishan, as this is for the first time the constituency being a new one is getting a minister.”
The newly inducted minister said he is aware of the responsibility bestowed on him and assured to work for the overall development of the state including his constituency.
Asked, the UDP senior legislator said he would leave it to the wisdom of the chief minister to decide on the portfolios to be given to him.
“I have not asked for any plum portfolio and I would leave it to the wisdom of the chief minister to decide on the matter. Whatever responsibility is given to me, I will try my best to live up to the expectation,” he said.
Later while speaking to reporters, chief minister Conrad K Sangma said the matter related to the distribution of portfolios will be discussed in the coalition.
“Though, it is he prerogative of the chief minister (to decide)…but I will take my coalition partners and my colleagues along in whatever decision I take so therefore we will be discussing and ensure whatever we do it is in the best interest of the people of the state,” Sangma said.
