SHILLONG, JUNE 4: The North-East Slow Food and Agrobiodiversity Society will organise the monthly Mei-Ramew Farmers’ Market on June 8, at their office premises in Laitumkhrah.
This market aims to promote and generate awareness on Indigenous Food Systems and its contribution towards food sovereignty and nutrition. It is also a platform for consumers to access organically produced food items and different varieties of wild edibles. They will also get the opportunity to communicate with the producers directly.
This event brings together communities, highlights the value of local foods and reinforces the need for community based action. A greater awareness has been generated in the communities on the importance of local foods and support local farmers through such initiatives.
Apart from the vegetables and Mei-Ramew products stalls, there will be two NESFAS Kitchen food stalls, which will serve traditional Khasi cuisines and Indonesian specialties on Saturday. The international cuisine stall will serve a variety of indigenous food of the Minangkabau community of West Sumatra, Indonesia.
The staff will also host a special indigenous tasting table for the media fraternity. Consumers will also get a chance to buy Mei-Ramew weaves products and millet as well. The market is an initiative that was started in April 2017 and many more editions have been organised in collaboration with like-minded organisations and institutions. As part of the REC funded initiative “No One Shall Be Left Behind”, NESFAS and its partners aim to improve local livelihoods opportunity and hope to turn this initiative into a regular event, serving as yet another platform to bring people together and connect them to “tasty, healthy and local food”.
