SHILLONG, MAR 4: Outgoing KHADC chief Hispreaching Son Shylla has expressed doubt whether the decision of the United Democratic Party (UDP) to make the chief executive member (CEM) post on a rotation basis will work.
Speaking to media persons here on Monday, Shylla said, “The UDP is left with no option because of too many leaders winning the just concluded MDC elections but I don’t know how this (rotation basis) will really work.”
The UDP is having 7 MDCs in the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) with the joining of Independent MDC from Mawlai Teibor Pathaw.
With the presence of many leaders, the party has decided to nominate former KHADC chairman and five-time MDC from Shella Teinwell Dkhar as the CEM for one year after it was agreed that the post will be held on a rotation basis.
Stating that this was the first time ever that such a decision was taken, Shylla however said, “If Teinwell Dkhar and his executive committee can perform well then the need to remove him should not arise. I feel such matter should be based on the performance of the leader.”
Shylla also congratulated Dkhar and recalled that he had earlier stated that if the previous House was extended in view of the amendment of the Sixth Schedule, then he is ready to handover the CEM chair to the Shella MDC.
“I am glad that this intention has come true because he (Dkhar) has shown his performance as the KHADC chairman and he is a gentleman and very serious at the same time,” he said.
Asked that he had earlier projected UDP leader Paul Lyngdoh as the incoming CEM of the KHADC, Shylla said, “Yes that is true. I later did turn to Lyngdoh as the incoming CEM and I like the fact that he is ready to pave way for Dkhar, being the senior MDC of the Council to take over as CEM.”
Meanwhile, the outgoing KHADC chief also appealed to the new executive committee and all elected members to ensure that the autonomous status of the district council is not compromised.
Apart from ensuring the passage of the various pending Bills passed by the Council, Shylla however said that the state government need to revive the financial assistance to enforcement wing of the KHADC’s trade department.
According to him, such support has been stopped for the past many years.
