SHILLONG, NOV 2: For the first time in the history of Garo Hills, a rare case of parasitic twins called Xyphophagus, which is a parasitic twin attached to the upper part of the abdomen and lower part of the chest of living twin of 7 months old female baby was successfully operated at Tura Civil Hospital, Tura recently.
The operation was done by Paediatric Surgeon, Maternity and Child Hospital, Tura Dr. Lee Roger Ch Marak along with Anaesthetist and MD, Tura Civil Hospital Dr Stevie Jaseng N Sangma.
As informed by the Superintendent, Tura Civil Hospital, Dr M A Sangma, the Child with parasitic twin having well and partially from the right upper limb was admitted at Tura Civil Hospital on September 11, from far flung area located in East Garo Hills.
She said that after certain observation and investigations of the child that such complicated case was successfully operated in Garo Hills even though the parasitic twin is connected to the vital organs of the living twin such as liver and intestine and prolapsed intestine coming out of the umbilicus.
Further, the Medical Superintendent said that the parasitic twin is a type of conjoint twins which occurs when one of the twins fail to develop during pregnancy and becomes non-functioning to the fully formed domain twin called autositic or living twin.
She said that underdeveloped twin is called parasitic which needs to be removed since it was partially develop and formed and is not functional or is totally dependent on the living twin for growth and development and thus affects the living twin.
Then she informed that without surgical intervention, it would have severely affected the living twin to live in the society due to social stigma including the child’s proper growth, development and education.
