Make PHC functional: MLA to Govt

SHILLONG, SEPT 12: A delegation of the Raid Marmain led by opposition Congress legislator from Nongpoh Mayral Born Syiem today demanded the state government to make the newly constructed primary health centre functional at the earliest.

After meeting the Health Minister AL Hek here on Wednesday, Syiem told reporters that the construction of the Marmain PHC has already been completed last year but the government is yet to sanction the required manpower to make it functional.

“We have urged the minister for his intervention into the matter to which he has assured the delegation that he would move the finance department for getting the posts sanctioned for the PHC,” he said.

According to the MLA, there has also been an increase in the cases of malaria in the areas falling under Raid Marmain in Ri Bhoi District.

Syiem said that opening of the Marmain PHC would reduce the burden of the existing Umden PHC which at present is catering to medical need of people from more than 72 villages.

“The Marmain PHC however is expected to cover 25 of the 72 villages, which are having a total population of over 15,000 villagers,” he said while informing that 10 to 12 villages are located along the inter-state border with Assam.

Meanwhile, the delegation also met the PHE Minister Samlin Malngiang requesting him to speed up the implementation of the Nongpoh Combine Greater Water Supply Scheme (NCGWSS) in order to resolve the problem of water crisis faced by 19 villages.

The Nongpoh MLA informed that the DPR which projected a total amount of Rs 72 crore for the water scheme has already been submitted to the state government.

“However, we have urged him (Samlin) to take up the matter since the DPR is lying pending with the planning department,” he said even as he informed that the government is also planning to get sanction of fund under the 15th Finance Commission.
