SHILLONG, AUG 27: Newly elected UDP legislator from Ranikor, Pius Marwein today assured to take up the issue relating to the ongoing ban on coal mining by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) which according to him has affected the livelihood of the people of South West Khasi Hills.
“I want to take up this issue because people of the region indirectly or directly depend their livelihood from coal,” Marwein told reporters soon after the result of the bye election was declared on Monday.
He however said with regards to the issue of Uranium mining, he would go with the voice of the majority.
Asked, the first time MLA said that his top priorities would be to ensure that Ranikor constituency is provided with proper road infrastructures, better education, health care facilities, water supply and others.
“I sincerely thanked the people of Ranikor for their support and I would appeal to them to let us work together to resolve the many problems faced by our constituency,” he said.
He also expressed his thankfulness to the UDP chief Donkupar Roy, ministers, MLAs and party leaders and workers for working hard to ensure his victory.
Marwein defeated former five-time legislator Martin M Danggo of the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) by a margin of nearly 3,000 votes.
Earlier in the February 27-Assembly polls held this year, Marwein had unsuccessfully contested against Danggo when he got defeated by a margin of 2002 votes.
Stating that the bye-election was really a big opportunity for him, Marwein said, “I feel very lucky when I came to learn that the sitting MLA had decided to resign which was not expected. Now, that the people has clearly indicated that they want change, I take this as a golden opportunity to give my best to serve the people of the constituency.”
