SHILLONG, AUG 2: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has decided to support any candidate of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) partners in the upcoming Ranikor bye-election to be held on August 23.
The decision was taken at the meeting of the Ranikor BJP Mandal held at Nongjri village in South West Khasi Hills District on Wednesday.
The meeting was chaired by the party state president Shibun Lyngdoh in the presence of other party leaders.
Lyngdoh highlighted on the bye-election and place before the meeting to decide on contesting the Ranikor constituency bye-election.
After the detailed discussions, the meeting unanimously decided not to field party candidate but to support any candidate of the MDA partners.
The MDA partners who are contesting the Ranikor bye-election include the National People’s Party (NPP), United Democratic Party (UDP) and the People Democratic Front (PDF).
Five-time legislator of the constituency Martin M Danggo will re-contest to retain the seat from the ruling NPP by contesting against UDP candidate Pius Marwein and PDF chairman Pynshngain N Syiem.
On the other hand, the opposition Congress is fielding a former student leader Jacuise K Sangma for the seat.
On contacting, BJP state president said that the party will remain neutral until and unless the MDA convenes a meeting to decide a consensus candidate for Ranikor.
“If there is any collective decision taken by the MDA, we will go by that. However, if there is none, our party will remain neutral which means our workers and supporters are allowed to support any candidate belonging to the MDA partners but they are asked not to support the Congress candidate,” Lyngdoh said.
Meanwhile, the BJP leader informed that the party in a meeting held recently at Tura in West Garo Hills District has decided to extend full support to the NPP national president and chief minister Conrad K Sangma as the consensus candidate of the MDA for the upcoming South-Tura by poll.
