SHILLONG, JULY 30: Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said that the state government will thoroughly examine the KHAD (Khasi Social Custom of Lineage) (Second amendment) Bill, 2018 once the matter is being referred by the Governor.

“We are still waiting and once this is done, we will examine the Bill and accordingly submit our views to the governor,” Tynsong told reporters after a delegation led by KHADC chief HS Shylla met him here on Monday.

Asked, the deputy chief minister said that not only the Autonomous District Councils even the State Government is committed towards protecting the interest of the three major indigenous tribes of the State.

“The KHADC has come up with this Bill since it might have thought that this can be one of the best mechanisms to protect the indigenous community from various kind of exploitation,” Tynsong said while refusing to give any further comment on the Bill.

Earlier, the KHADC had also met and submitted the Bill to the Governor Ganga Prasad.

On the other hand, Tynsong also said that he will have nothing to say even if the Governor approved the Bill without consulting the state government.

“Being a constitutional body, the KHADC is free to legislate laws in matters under its jurisdiction. The Government is not authorized to intrude on matters falling under the Council,” he added.
