SHILLONG, JULY 16: The Public Accounts Committee of the State Assembly has decided to conduct inspections of the various pending water supply projects especially those in the rural areas of the state.
Speaking to reporters after a meeting held with the officials of the Public Health Engineering department here on Monday, PAC chairman Charles Pyngrope said that the committee has reviewed the functioning of the department and the implementation of the various schemes.
Pynrope, who is also senior Congress legislator from Nongthymmai, said that the meeting also discussed on the shortcomings and the steps to be taken for improving the functioning of the department for the benefit of the public.
On the other hand, PAC member and Mawsynram legislator Himalaya Shangpliang said that the Committee is more concern with the implementation of the rural water supply schemes in view that most of the rural villages do not get proper drinking water supply system.
Informing that the PAC has decided to conduct inspections of such schemes that are lying pending, Shangpliang said, “There will be two groups from the PAC who will go and inspect the many schemes in the rural areas in the Western and Eastern range of the state.”
He said that the PAC would like to see that the people of the state get the benefit of proper supply of drinking water and they can also meet and apprise the committee of the problems that they faced.
On the Swachh Bharat mission, Shangpliang said that the Committee has appealed to the department to come up with more community toilets we know the ODF certification that is under way to make the whole state free from open defecation.
According to him, community toilets and the management of liquid and solid waste still needs to be taken up by the department concerned.
“These are the things that are looming large particularly the management of solid and liquid waste and also on community toilets which are required in public places including markets – which can be taken up easily under the swachh bharat mission,” he added.
