SHILLONG, JUNE 25: Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) today asked the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) government to ensure the creation of the Ranikor Civil Sub-division should go beyond just laying of a foundation stone.
Speaking to media persons here on Monday, KSU Ranikor Circle president Marcony Thongni said, “We don’t want that the decision of the state government to upgrade Ranikor Administrative Unit into a civil sub-division to end only in laying of a foundation stone.”
The statement came prior to the inauguration of the newly created civil sub-division at Ranikor in South West Khasi District, which was proposed to be held on July 10.
Stating that Ranikor deserved to be upgraded into a civil sub-division, Thongni said because Ranikor area has been long neglected by the government in term of transport, education and communication.
“People including government employees in the area are still using Bangladesh Sim Card,” he said.
Under the present administrative unit, there are 160 villages, 200 schools, one police station, two police outposts, one bank, one PHC, one PHE sub-division, two PWD sub-divisions, one soil conservation office, one agricultural office and others.
It may be mentioned that the recent announcement of the state government has also led to the resignation of five-time Ranikor legislator Martin M Danggo as member of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly.
Asked, KSU Ranikor president however said that the former legislator, who was elected for the past 25 years, should have taken up the matter seriously right from the time he was in the ruling government.
“However now it seems that he (Danggo) wants to bring all round development in one go but we don’t know whether it is possible for him to do that or not,” he said.
