SHILLONG, JUNE 18: The district administration of East Khasi Hills has decided to further relax the curfew after assessing the overall situation following the recent violent protest in the state capital.
In an order issued here on Monday, the district administrator said in view of the prevailing law and order situation, the night curfew in areas falling under the Shillong agglomeration has been relaxed from Tuesday with effect from 11 pm to 5 am.
However, the curfew in Motphran and other 13 affected localities has been relaxed for 16 hours from 5 am to 9 pm and is promulgated again with effect from 9 pm to 5 am until further orders, he said.
The areas under Lumdiengjri Police Station, which include, Jaïaw, Mawkhar, Umsohsun, Riatsamthiah, Wahingdoh, Mission, Mawprem, Lumdiengjri, Lamavilla, Qualapatty, Wahthapbru, Sunny Hill, Cantonment, Mawlong Hat including Cantonment Beat House areas (excluding localities beyond Umshyrpi bridge).
Earlier, the curfew in the 14 localities was relaxed for 13 hours from 5 am to 8 pm, and from 8 pm to 5 am, while the night curfew in the entire city was from 10 pm to 5 am.
It may be mentioned here that the violent protest by angry mob led to a volatile situation in Shillong particularly Motphran and Mawkhar which continued for five days.
Mob pelted stones at security personnel during the agitation while security forces resorted to firing of tear gas shells to disperse the agitated mob.
A high level committee was constituted to examine all records and documents, and recommend feasible solution on the pending demand to shift settlers from Them Iew Mawlong.
The committee headed by deputy chief minister, Prestone Tynsong was asked to submit its recommendations to the government at the earliest.
