SHILLONG, MAY 30: BJP leader and Health Minister Alexander L Hek today said the six-party Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government will remain strong till the end of five years term.
“The MDA is strong and it is going to complete full five years term because we are here to stay and govern the state,” Hek told reporters here on Wednesday.
He was reacting to the recent statement made by the Congress leader and former chief minister Mukul Sangma that the MDA government led by the National People’s Party (NPP) is just an “adhoc government”.
Asked whether the opposition Congress has the intention to topple the present government, the BJP leader admitted that not only the Congress but every political party will always try to resort to toppling game.
“They (Congress) will keep on trying (to topple the government) but we (all MDA partners) are going to stay together. We are working here with all like-minded political parties against the Congress,” he said.
Apart from the NPP and BJP, the other partners of the MDA include the United Democratic Party (UDP), People’s Democratic Front (PDF), Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP), Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and independents.
On the claim of the Congress to form the government after the results of the Ampati bye-election, which will be declared tomorrow, Hek however expressed confidence that the MDA candidate Clement G Momin will come out victorious.
The Congress has fielded Mukul’s daughter Miani D Shira for Ampati seat, which was a strong bastion of her father for the past 25 years. Earlier, the Congress had lost the Williamnagar seat to the NPP.
The strength of the MDA at present is 37 while the opposition Congress is with only 20 in the present 59 member house.
