New CJ of Meghalaya High Court sworn in

SHILLONG, MAY 21: Justice Mohammad Yaqoob Mir was today sworn in as new Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court.

Governor Ganga Prasad administered the oath of office to the new chief justice at the swearing in ceremony held at the Raj Bhavan here on Monday in the presence of cabinet ministers and other dignataries.

Speaking to reporters, Justice Yaqoob Mir said, “My priority is to do justice, to encourage dispensation of justice and to develop the infrastructure besides ensuring justice reaches to everyone and try to see that something better is done.”

Asked, the new chief justice said that he would also see to it that the strength of judges in the High Court is increased besides ensuring that pending cases especially those related to POCSO are disposed of at the earliest.

“I will try my level best to see that justice is delivered speedily,” he added.

Justice Yaqoob Mir did his LLB from Kashmir University, after which he practiced as an advocate between 1981 to 1993. He was appointed as a District and Sessions Judge in 1993.

In 2007, he was elevated as an Additional Judge of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court. He was made a permanent judge of the Court in October 2009. He has previously served as the Acting Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir High Court in 2015.
