SHILLONG, APR 26: As part of modernization of the jails in the state, an e-Prison software, which is the first of its kind in the North East region was launched by the home minister James K Sangma at the Shillong District Jail here on Thursday.
Speaking on the occasion, Sangma said that inmates needs to be treated humanly as stressed on the need to provide vocational training to them.
He informed that the government is taking measures for the setting up of a Central jail so that hardcore criminal, convicts can be separated with UTPs and petty criminals.
According to him, steps are also being taken to ensure that the Nongstoin jail which has been delayed for years is completed at the earliest.
Stating that the Government wants to introduce video conferencing facilities in Williamnagar and Tura District jails, he added that the Government is also keen to connect all the District jails in the state with the CCTV cameras.
Earlier in his speech, DG Prisons RP Agarwal said that the state government is focusing on the modernization of jails and informed Ministry of Home Affairs has sanctioned Rs 42 lakh for the project.
Informing that the ministry would sanction more funds for such projects till 2020, he said that the prisons department is also contemplating to extend the programme in other district jails in the state which include Nongpoh and Jowai.
Under the e-Prisons, details on the number of inmates and also the visitors who visit them in the jail will be made available. The photographs of the inmates would also be shared in the software as soon as they are admitted in the jail and inmates will be issued with identity card.
At present, the Shillong District Jail is having around 460 prisoners.
The DG prisons also urged the state government to amend the services rules for the prisons department as there is a vacancy of 40 posts and they would like to recruit those people who are computer literate.
Senior officials of the department, jail staffs were also present on the occasion and one of the main highlights of the programme was the beautiful rendition of a Hindi movie song sung by the inmates of the jail.
