SHILLONG, APR 19: The state government on Thursday assured that it would take up with the Centre government for making functional the land custom station (LCS) at Balat in East Khasi Hills District.
Replying in the Assembly here, Home Minister James K Sangma informed that the 10th bilateral meeting between India and Bangladesh held in New Delhi has agreed to examine re-opening of the Balat LCS.
At the same time, he said that a week’s back, the district industries centre of Meghalaya sent a team to examine the proposal and submitted a report.
He also informed that the report have been forwarded to the Government of India and henceforth the Government of India will take necessary action based on report sent by the state government of Meghalaya.
“We will take it up with the Centre government for taking the matter up with the Bangladesh government,” Sangma said.
To a query raised by Congress MLA HM Shangpliang, the home minister said that the Balat LCS was non functional because the amount of trade was not there and therefore the exporters was showing no interest of using the LCS.
Earlier, Shangpliang urged the state government to consider renaming the Balat LCS to Dangar LCS since the land custom station geographically is being located at Dangar village.
To this, Sangma assured that the matter will be taken up with the Government of India as naming of the land custom station is being done it.
