HNLC demands MDA govt to implement ILP

SHILLONG, APR 13: The proscribed Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) today demanded the NPP-led MDA government to consider implementing effective laws like the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system to check influx and illegal immigrants into the state.

At the same time, the outfit said that the state government should not only concern about Bangladeshi nationals but also take up the matter with the Centre to end the Indo Nepal Treaty of Peace and Friendship, 1950.

“There will not be any difficulty for the MDA government to demand from the Centre for implementation of this law (ILP) especially when the present chief minister Conrad K Sangma is also a member of the parliament (MP),” HNLC publicity secretary Sainkupar Nongtraw said in a statement issued here on Friday.

He however said, “If Conrad is not able to do anything on this matter, it would only mean that he is just a ‘political clown’ who is entertaining the BJP-led NDA government at the centre.”

His statement also came as a reaction to the discussion on the government’s proposal for issuing of work permit to Bangladeshi nationals in the ongoing session of the Meghalaya Assembly.

Opposition Congress had also staged a walk-out as a mark of protest against the MDA government and demanded that the idea of issuing of work permit to Bangladeshi nationals should be immediately done away with.

Nongtraw however said that the present state government should also propose to the Centre for scrapping of the Nepal Treaty of Peace and Friendship, 1950, which allows free movement of Nepal people in the country.

He alleged that the Assam government is also using Nepalese at Langpih village in West Khasi Hills District along the inter-state border to illegally encroach into the territory of Meghalaya.

Slamming the Congress party, Nongtraw further alleged that the former chief minister Mukul Sangma is the “God of corruptions” who is responsible for poor economic development and law and order situation in the state.

Accusing the Congress of sheltering Bangladeshis for the past 47 years, the outfit’s publicity secretary said, “The walk-out staged by the Congress over the issue (of work permit to Bangladeshis) is just political eyewash.”

Referring to the statement made by MLA from East Shillong Ampareen Lyngdoh in the floor of the House on whether there are Bangladeshi nationals in Meghalaya, Nongtraw said that he would instead ask her whether or not a “Bangladesh Colony” exist in Shillong.

He said the Bangladesh Colony located at Umpling in the city was named by Hindu refugees and it is a place given to them as rehabilitation during the Pakistan war in 1971.

“Why has the Congress when it was in power failed to deport back these Bangladeshis. These people who have been residing for many years in Meghalaya have also got their citizenship since the time of former PM Indira Gandhi,” Nongtraw said while stating that it is pointless for the Congress to worry over the issuing of work permit to Bangladeshi nationals now.
