PDF to win in 10 seats: Syiem

SHILLONG, FEB 9: The People’s Democratic Front (PDF) which had projected a chief ministerial candidate today said that it is hoping to win in only ten of the sixty seats in the February 27-Assembly elections in the state.

“We are expecting to get ten seats in the upcoming polls,” PDF leader, Pynshngain N Syiem, who is also the chief ministerial candidate of the party, told journalists after releasing the election manifesto and song album here on Friday.

The party, which was formed in March, last year has fielded as many as twenty-two candidates out of the 36 constituencies in the Khasi-Jaintia Hills region.

Asked, Syiem, who is also holding post of chief executive member in the KHADC, said that the party will support non-Congress political parties to form the next government in the state.

“However the post-poll alliance will only be decided after results of the poll,” he added.

Denying of having any links with the Bharitiya Janata Party (BJP) and an NDA ally, the National People’s Party (NPP), the PDF leader said that the party is neither supporting the BJP nor the NPP in this election.

“We have not given any direction to our party leaders that they should support any parties from where the PDF is not fielding candidates,” he said.

The ruling Congress has alleged that all regional political parties in the state are working with the BJP by failing to set up candidates in constituencies where the BJP is contesting.

Reacting to this, Syiem however said that the reason for the PDF not contesting in some of the constituencies because of lack of candidates and where the party has less chance to win.
