Resolution withdrawn after good sense prevailed: Mukul

SHILLONG, DEC 8: The ruling Congress-led state government today welcomed the decision of the opposition National People’s Party (NPP) to withdraw its resolution against the Assembly’s Speaker citing that “good sense has prevailed”.

Speaker Abu Taher Mondal informed the House during the winter session which began here on Friday that he had received a letter from NPP MLA James K Sangma yesterday informing about his decision to withdraw the resolution.

Speaking to media persons after the session, chief minister Mukul Sangma said, “Good sense prevailed as it is very important for every deliberation in this august house to ultimately have a positive outcome.”

Stating that it is important for all to utilise the precious time available, he said the session which is only three days now can be used productively for the larger good of the people and the state unlike in the past proceedings of the august House.

Sangma added, “As we face the people and seek their mandate again as respective political parties, we will have reasons to tell them why they should have faith in our democratic system and have confident in the leadership of the state.”

“We have leaders from across the political spectrums and people are looking at us as everyone has a responsibility towards the state and our beloved people, am sure that is the reason the whole good sense prevailed,” he stated.

The NPP had sought the removal of the Speaker on three counts – for failing to convene the House in time after the budget session was held in March this year, for the delay in the construction of the Assembly building even after the selection of site and for the overall lack of confidence in the Speaker by the members of the House.

NPP spokesperson James K Sangma, said, “Since the government has convened the Assembly session, therefore we have decided to withdraw the resolution for removal of the Speaker yesterday.”

The other Opposition parties which include the United Democratic Party and the Hills State Peoples Democratic Party, however, claimed that there was no consensus among them when the NPP submitted the resolution last month.

“The resolution was moved by James (NPP leader). We are not aware of it,” Leader of Opposition Donkupar Roy said at the premises of the Assembly building.

Roy who is also the president of the United Democratic Party said that there no discussion was held among the Opposition parties in this regards.

HSPDP president Ardent Basaiawmoit said, “Our party felt it was not appropriate to bring such a resolution at a time when the party is gearing up for the upcoming poll.”

He said, “We cannot shift our focus at this juncture to any toppling move against the government.”

For the admission of the resolution, 12 members of the Opposition have to rise up in the House in support failing which it will not be entertained.
