SHILLONG, NOV 29: The state law enforcement apparatus today, gained another asset in terms of providing a sense of security to the people with the inauguration of the Damalgre Police Station in South West Garo Hills by Sports & Youth Affairs Minister Zenith Sangma. Sangma inaugurated the police station in the presence of Forest & Environment Minister Clement Marak, Government Chief Whip Winnerson Sangma, Mahendraganj MLA Dikkanchi D Shira, GHADC CEM Boston Marak and GHADC Chairperson S M Sangma amongst others.
The state has now 18 Police Stations dedicated to tackling law and order problems, especially in far flung and remote areas which will demoralize subversive activities by criminals and facilitate swift response in times of emergency.
The jurisdiction of Damalgre police station will extend to 37 villages under South West Garo Hills District including some that were previously under Tura police station.
Addressing the gathering Sports & Youth Affairs Minister Zenith Sangma said that the police station was the outcome of the government’s endeavor to bring police administration closer to the people. The government under the leadership of Meghalaya Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma has made steps to strengthen the state’s police force to minimize dependence on central assistance to deal with law and order problems and ensure a sense of security to the people of the region stated the Minister. He said that certain difficulties like language barrier etc create hurdles when central paramilitary forces are deployed to interior villages to contain insurgency and other related problems which eventually results in discrimination of the indigenous population.
Speaking on the state’s police recruitment system Sangma stated that an effective and transparent recruitment system had been developed to ensure that only deserving candidates got through the selection process.
Sangma later informed that the Chief Minister would soon lay the base for the college of Architecture and Urban Planning and the Williamson Sangma Technical Institute in Jewillgre, South West Garo Hills. He also congratulated the people of the region and said that the government was dedicated to fulfill the aims and aspirations of the people.
Earlier, Director General of Police S B Singh informed the gathering that the states police force had come a long way since its inception. The state police including the SF-10 are doing very well and they have managed to outdo their counterparts from other states in various training programmes like the NSG, SWAT etc to name a few Singh said. He also informed that the state police had launched operation Bonding under the directive of Meghalaya Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma wherein the objective is to gain the confidence of the people and promote cordial police public relations.
Prior to the inauguration of the police station South West Garo Hills Deputy Commissioner Cyril Darlong Diengdoh read out the government notification for the creation of the Damalgre PS and handed the document to the Officer in Charge.
Among others who were present at the inauguration were GHADC MDCs Stevie Marak, N Koch J D Sangma, DIG Western Range O Passi, South West Garo Hills ADC H D B Sangma, West Garo Hills SP Dr M R Kumar, South West Garo Hills SP Bobby W Momin, 2nd Meghalaya Battallion Commandant Dr S Marak and Betasing Block Development Officer A G Momin.
