SHILLONG, NOV 20: Along with the rest of the country, the Meghalaya Pradesh Congress Committee observed the year-long Indira Gandhi Birth Centenary Celebrations beginning on November 19.
The state level concluding function was held at Congress Bhawan, Shillong, in the midst of huge gathering of party leaders, members well wishers and supporters of the party. The occasion was observed today instead of November, which happened to be a Sunday.
Similar functions were held in all eleven district congress committees (DCCs), and two City Congress Committees and the block congress committees (BCCs) and Booth Levels, throughout the State during the day.
Addressing the large gathering, MPCC chief DD Lapang, wondered “100 years ago, who might have thought the child who was born on November 19, would change the face of not only India, but the world as whole”, except her grandfather Pandit Motilal Nehru who read her forehead and professed that “she would be great”.
While tracking the life and contributions of Indira Gandhi, Lapang observed that she had a political instinct in her, which had guided her throughout the whole journey.
“She left strong foot prints on the rocks of the history which will never be washed away” – Lapang observed. He also spoke of her contributions on Green Revolution and other programmes which made the nation strong.
Lapang regretted that the strong foundation of secularism as laid by her is being threatened by certain forces.
He called upon the party men to leave no stone unturned to bring the party back to power. He reminded the gathering about her words in her last public meeting at Orissa “……every drops of her blood would strengthen the nation …”
He also expressed gratitude to Late Indira Gandhi for giving the state of Meghalaya “to allow its people to grow according to their own genius”.
Other who addressed the gathering included James S. Lyngdoh, Working President MPCC, PT Sawkmie, MDC, Vice President, Shillong City Congress Committee Joplin Scott Shylla, President Meghalaya Pradesh Mahila Congress, Fernandez Dkhar, General Secretary, Meghalaya Pradesh Youth Congress, which was attended among others by Charles Pyngrope, President, Shillong City Congress Committee, Polycarp K Marak, Dr Manash Das Gupta, Sanjay Das and HM Shangpliang, all General Secretaries Meghalaya PCC, WHD Syngkon, Legal Adviser, MPCC.
