SHILLONG, NOV 13: The Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) Ri Bhoi District today opposed the proposed move of the Assam government to set up a police out post at Umru village and demanded the state government to immediately intervene into the alleged illegal act.
The Council also suggested the Meghalaya government to seek the intervention of either the Supreme Court or the Central government into the age-old boundary dispute with Assam, if it cannot be resolved through the ongoing dialogue between the two states.
In a memorandum submitted to the chief minister Mukul Sangma here on Monday, HYC-RBD president John Nongrum said, “We register our protest against this illegal act and we demand that necessary action to deal with this issue in a serious manner…”
He informed that the Assam government through its police department had illegally trespasses into Meghalaya territory at Umru village near Tyrso under Raid Nongtung for setting up of a police outpost.
Stating that such acts by the Assam government violates the status quo agreement agreed by the two states, Nongrum said that this has created tension within the areas falling under Block II.
Referring to the ongoing inter-state border talks between Assam and Meghalaya, the HYC leader however said that the Council is of the view that such violation act by the Assam government still continues then there’s no point of continuing with the dialogues.
“We would also like to suggest that if the dialogue cannot resolve the dispute, then strong ways and means must be prepared to take the long pending and unresolved issue either to the Supreme Court or to the Central government,” he stated in the memorandum.
