Tura, Oct 23: A legislator from Meghalaya Cherak Momin today wrote to Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal seeking his intervention for poor road connecting Daranggre in Goalpara district of Assam to Kharkutta in North Garo Hills.
Momin said that the stretch of road under Assam is in need of major repair. The legislator of Kharkutta pointed that the 5 kms stretch of road has been lying in a pathetic state for over a decade.
He stated in his letter to Sonowal that the biggest annual Christian convention would be held next year at Rajasimla in North Garo Hills and immediate intervention of the government of Assam would ease the problem of the people and facilitate holding of the mega event.
“I would like to draw your attention to the dilapidated condition of the Daranggre – Kharkutta road under the Rural Roads Division of Goalpara. The road is a lifeline for people around the region and despite many efforts, including writing to the PWD minister in-charge of Assam, there has been no positive response to the matter,” Momin said in his letter to Sonowal.
Dudhnoi MLA Deepak Rabha had earlier stated that the road had already been sanctioned and was likely to be done quickly after the tendering process. There has however not been much more heard after that.
“The Baptist Congregation (ABDK Sobha) will be held in February next year. The same road is proposed to be a one way to get to the gathering that will take place over 5 days,” he added.
The Kharkutta MLA further stated that in order to avoid any mishaps as well as to ease the pains of the residents of the area, the road needed immediate repair on an urgent basis.
Momin said that Sonowal has confirmed receipt of the letter to him through a text message. “I really hope they look into the repair of the road as it is going to be very difficult otherwise for the lakhs that come for the congregation,” Momin added.
